Trainee Instructor Mentoring

PDI Training and ADI Coaching in North West London

One-to-one PDI coaching and in-car mentoring for Potential Driving Instructors (PDIs) and new trainee instructors across North West London and Watford, delivered by DVSA-approved driving instructor Ilona Mansoor in a modern dual-control automatic car.

What the coaching covers

Many national instructor courses give you theory books and online videos, but leave you feeling under-prepared for sitting in the passenger seat and coaching a real learner in London traffic. Our mentoring bridges that gap with practical, one-to-one sessions in the same modern dual-control automatic car Ilona uses for daily tuition.

  • ADI Part 1 foundations applied on the road: Turning Highway Code knowledge, road procedure and teaching theory into clear explanations you can use in the car.
  • In-car coaching and lesson structure: Practising how to plan a two-hour session, set goals with a pupil, adapt your support, and ask effective questions.
  • Fault identification and risk management: Spotting developing hazards early from the passenger seat, giving timely prompts, and using dual controls smoothly.
  • Demonstration driving in an automatic: Refining your commentary driving, mirror routines, road positioning and manoeuvres on North West London roads.

How to become a driving instructor

To qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in Great Britain, you must have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years (and be at least 21 years old before you apply to join the register), complete an enhanced DBS check, and pass the three-part DVSA qualification process:

Step DVSA Requirement
ADI Part 1 Theory test (100 multiple-choice questions across four bands plus hazard perception), unlimited attempts.
ADI Part 2 Driving ability test (eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, and a high-standard practical drive), maximum 3 attempts.
ADI Part 3 Instructional ability test (a DVSA examiner observes you delivering a real client-centred lesson), maximum 3 attempts.
Time limit You must book and pass ADI Part 3 within 2 years of passing ADI Part 1.
Trainee licence Optional pink badge after passing Parts 1 and 2. Requires at least 40 hours of training from a qualified ADI (including at least 10 hours in a car) and lasts for 6 months.

Please note that the DVSA is introducing a mandatory code of practice to replace the voluntary ADI code between late 2026 and early 2027, placing greater emphasis on professional conduct and client-centred standards. For official rules, fees and applications, see the GOV.UK guide on how to become a car driving instructor.

Training in North West London

Location matters when you are training to become a driving instructor. Mill Hill Driving Test Centre on Bunns Lane (NW7) offers both ADI Part 2 and ADI Part 3 examinations in addition to standard learner tests. Practising on the exact roads, steep gradients, high-speed dual carriageways (the A1 Watford Way and A41) and multi-lane roundabouts (such as Apex Corner, Stirling Corner and Five Ways Corner) used around Mill Hill gives you a genuine local advantage.

Our PDI coaching sessions start in Mill Hill and cover Edgware, Hendon & Colindale, Harrow, Wembley, Watford and Bushey. Because these are the same areas where you will likely teach learners once qualified, you also build practical knowledge of local nursery routes, complex junctions and test centre approaches.
